In this combination caper comedy and
offbeat romance, Emily (Alicia
Silverstone) is a
wealthy but
petulant young woman desperate to get the attention of her millionaire
father, Alexander Hope. In fact, she's so desperate that she decides to
stage her own kidnapping; she sends a ransom note, ties herself up, and
locks herself in the trunk of her BMW, waiting for daddy to come to the
rescue; however, Emily's timing is a bit off, because ten minutes later,
hunky car thief Vincent (Benicio
del Toro) steals the BMW with Emily
still in it. Vincent and his partner in crime, Greg,
eventually discover the car's trunk has an unexpected surprise. When Emily
is unable to convince them to help her with her scheme, she becomes a
problem the carjackers can't get rid of, especially after Alexander refuses
to pay her ransom, and his creepy right-hand man, Raymond (Christopher
Walken), heads out to find her. Of course, losing 200,000 dollars in mob
money is not making Vincent's life any easier, nor is having the emotionally

Sie ist reich,
blond und bildhübsch: Emily, die wohlbehütete, leicht verzogene Göre möchte
ihren unnahbar reichen Vater schockieren. Deshalb inszeniert sie ihre eigene
Entführung. Im Kofferraum ihres BMWs wartet sie darauf, von der Polizei
entdeckt zu werden. Doch dann geht ihr Plan dramatisch schief. Ausgerechnet
der gutaussehende, etwas naive Autodieb Vincent stiehlt den Luxuswagen - mit
Emily im Gepäck. Schon bald haben die beiden nicht nur eine Meute von zu
allem entschlossenen Gangstern, sondern auch Emilys "Onkel Ray" auf den
Fersen. Dieser ist ein Ex-CIA-Killer, mit dem nicht zu spaßen ist. Emily und
Vincent merken, daß ihre einzige Rettung nur die Flucht zu zweit ist...

Kurz nach dem
Bombenerfolg der Teeniekomödie "Clueless - Was sonst?" unterzeichnete die
jugendliche Hauptdarstellerin Alicia Silverstone einen 10-Mio.-Dollar-Deal
mit Columbia Pictures für zwei Projekte - ein Schritt, der in der Branche
mit ungläubigem Staunen quittiert wurde. Als Erstlingswerk ihrer eigens
gegründeten "First Kiss Productions" wartet die mittlerweile neunzehnjährige
Produzentin und Protagonistin in Personalunion nun mit einer romantischen
Komödie mit Actionelementen auf.
Die Geschichte nimmt
ihren Ausgang mit einem "Noir"-artigen Voiceover, in dem die Protagonistin
Emily Hope (Silverstone) erklärt, daß sie sich immer nach der Liebe ihres
Vaters gesehnt hat. Infolge sieht man, wie sie mit elektronisch veränderter
Stimme von ihrem Vater eine Mio. Dollar Lösegeld fordert, sich selbst mit
Klebeband verschnürt und in den Kofferraum ihres dicken BMWs einsperrt. Doch
statt wie erhofft vom überglücklichen Daddy in die Arme geschlossen zu
werden, klaut der gewiefte Autodieb Vincent (Benicio Del Toro) den
Luxusschlitten samt seines unerwarteten "Gepäcks". Der arme Vincent ahnt
nicht, was für eine Ladung Ärger er sich damit eingebrockt hat...

Emily entpuppt sich als
kickboxende Göre, die droht, ihm die Schuld für das selbstinszenierte
Kidnapping in die Schuhe zu schieben, und mit ihrer Kettenraucherei Vincents
Fabrikwohnhalle abfackelt. Bald sind dem ungleichen Paar nicht nur die Cops
auf den Fersen, sondern auch zwei Ganoven (Nicholas Turturro und Michael
Bowen), denen Vincent nach dem Brand Geld schuldet. Zudem erscheint auch
noch Emilys dubioser Onkel Ray (Christopher Walken in seiner typisch
eisgekühlten Psychopathenrolle - diesmal mit komischem Dreh) auf dem ohnehin
recht chaotischen Plan.
Die Inszenierung
geht auf das Konto von "Demoltion Man"-Regisseur Marco Brambilla, der die
obligatorischen Autoverfolgungsjagden und die feurige Explosion
actionversiert ins rechte Licht zu rücken versteht. Das Drehbuch wurde von
immerhin drei verschiedenen Autoren verfaßt, die so manche Unebenheit
dennoch nicht ausbügeln konnten. Beim hochkarätigen Soundtrack wurde mit
diversen Rockhits von den Wallflowers und der Dave Matthews Band geklotzt.
