New York's Roseland ballroom was in 1977 the traditional gathering place of senior citizens who wanted briefly to relive the good old days. Appropriately, the cast of Merchant/Ivory's Roseland includes a quartet of always-welcome showbiz veterans: Teresa Wright, Lou Jacobi, Helen Gallagher. The episodic storyline is unified by an unending flow of vintage hit songs, including "Slow Boat to China", "Stranger in Paradise" and "Rockin' Chair". The most effective vignette involves cleaning-lady Skala, whose minimum-wage job supports her weekly ballroom nostalgia-fests. Seit dem Tode ihres Mannes kommt May (Teresa Wright) allein ins "Roseland". Auch Stan (Lou Jacobi), ein temperamentvoller Witwer, kann das schließlich nicht mehr hören und gibt May das auf seine Weise zu verstehen. Die reiche Witwe Pauline (Joan Copeland) ist ebenfalls häufig im "Roseland". Dort arbeitet der junge Gigolo Russel (Christopher Walken), den Pauline durch ihr Geld an sich gebunden hat. Als Russel bei ihrer Geburtstagsfeier die jüngere Marilyn (Geraldine Chaplin) kennen lernt und sich in sie verliebt, droht Pauline ihn zu verlieren. Die alte Rosa (Lilia Skala) würde das "Roseland" am liebsten überhaupt nicht mehr verlassen. Dabei hat sie nie geschafft, was sie sich so sehnlich wünschte: zusammen mit Arthur (David Thomas) einmal den Peabody-Wettbewerb zu gewinnen. Dieser alte Herr war eine Seele von Mensch, aber ein schwacher Tänzer, und jetzt ist er tot.

Three interlocking stories set in New York City’s legendary Roseland dance palace make up this charming film, the third to be shot by Merchant Ivory Productions in America. In the first segment, The Waltz, Teresa Wright is a widow who comes to the Roseland in order to sustain the memory of her late husband, but meets Stan (Lou Jacobi), a man who offers her an opportunity for happiness in the present. In The Hustle, Christopher Walken stars as a gigolo with three women in his life, all of whom depend on him for different degrees of romance and companionship. In the final segment, The Peabody, an older Viennese woman (Lilia Skala) sets out to win a dance competition despite warnings that it could imperil her health. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s understated screenplay delivers an uncharacteristic bit of sentiment not present in other Merchant Ivory efforts. (1977)

--The delightful ROSELAND is director James Ivory’s first film set within a contemporary American setting. At New York City’s famed Roseland Ballroom, the romantic and brokenhearted come together in a trilogy of stories. The first vignette, THE WALTZ, stars Teresa Wright as May, a widow, and Lou Jacobi as her suitor. THE HUSTLE stars Christopher Walken (in an early screen appearance) as a charming gigolo who has abandoned his hopes for dance fame in lieu of a more financially rewarding life. The third vignette, THE PEABODY stars Lilia Skala as Rosa, a woman hoping to compete in the vigorous dance, the Peabody, despite health warnings.

Except for a handful of exterior scenes, the entire film was shot on location inside the Roseland Ballroom; however, the filmmakers were allowed to shoot the extensive dance scenes only on Wednesday nights. Roseland wouldn’t allow any of its lights or interiors to be changed, but the scenic artists’ union demanded Merchant Ivory hire an art director and a scenic artist even though the ballroom’s stipulations made them unnecessary. Overcoming these production difficulties, ROSELAND emerges as an enjoyable tribute to both the historic New York institution and its love-seeking patrons.
